How Often Should Industrial Electrical Systems Be Inspected?
Industrial electrical systems fail differently than commercial systems. Heavier motor loads, higher fault currents, and more frequent duty cycles all shorten the practical inspection interval. Here is what we recommend for light industrial facilities across the Lowcountry.
Monthly, by facility maintenance
Visual walkdown of MCCs, VFD cabinets, and process disconnects. Check for heat discoloration, loose covers, and stored materials blocking clearances.
Quarterly, by facility maintenance or contractor
Functional test of every emergency disconnect and lockout point. Verify labeling. Log breaker trips, motor starter faults, and VFD fault codes for pattern analysis.
Semi-annual, by licensed electrician
Thermographic imaging of motor control centers under normal production load. VFD input and output terminals, motor starter contactors, and process feeder terminations are common finding locations.
Annual, by licensed electrician
Full NFPA 70B condition assessment. Insulation resistance testing on process feeders. Torque verification on service and MCC lugs. Written report with severity-ranked recommendations.
Every three to five years, by engineering firm
Arc-flash and short-circuit coordination study refresh. Update labeling on any equipment that has been modified since the last study. Verify selective coordination between upstream and downstream protective devices.
